Greywacke House occupies a remarkable site opposite Elephant Rock at Currumbin Beach. Perched high on a rugged ridgeline overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the site sits at a rare threshold between rainforest and coastline.

One of the defining characteristics of the site is its ecological transition. From the highest point on site coastal rainforest gives way to exposed weathered rock, salty air and uninterrupted views. This natural transition down the site has been used to position an apartment below the main house, with both dwellings sitting comfortably together and allowing different generations to live alongside one another.

The main house emerges from the shelter of the rainforest and holds a commanding position at the top of the site with uninterrupted views from north to south. Spaces within the house are carefully arranged to foster both togetherness and independence, while ensuring the home can adapt as family needs change overtime. Lower down, a multi-level apartment is nestled into the rock escarpment, engaging directly with the raw coastal edge and street. Together, the two dwellings establish their own unique dialogue and connect through material and landscape.

Materials were selected to draw directly from the colours and textures of the landscape. Greywacke stone and warm brickwork reference the site's underlying geology, while deep green and bronze-brown finishes combine to echo the surrounding vegetation. Tactile and enduring, they will weather gracefully over time, reinforcing the home's sense of permanence and belonging.
